theo@theblackarts.com BioTheo grew up an only child in Penn Wynn, PA. He was raised by his mother, a market researcher who loved to eat baby birds (otherwise known as balut). They moved many times between NJ and PA while on his mother’s quest for ultimate power. Theo went to many fine schools including the Penn Charter school for boys. He took horseback riding and developed an obsession with Star Wars, Karate and pet rabbits.
Theo did very well in school but after a near knife fight in 7th grade Theo was shipped off to the Pennington Prep School. At Pennington he learned a lot about sci fi cons, girls and Dungeons & Dragons. Theo started a gaming club called the “Rooks.” In his senior year, his class voted him most radical and most likely to succeed in an art career. There was also a rumor that he brought back a human head while on a class trip to France. At the end of high school, he met Holly at a D&D game. She quickly became his new obsession.
Theo and Holly moved to Philadelphia where they attended college. During college Theo started painting fantasy art seriously. He also smashed a bizarre modern art statue while dueling in the courtyard at his school. After college Theo worked for a goth gaming magazine called d8 and worked professionally as an illustrator while selling exotic birds and doing medical market research presentations to pay the bills.
Theo worked for many gaming companies before TSR/Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro. In addition to the work he did for Hasbro he illustrated gothic punk angels, magic-slinging cowboys, morose trolls and undead Samurai. He also painted his childhood hero “Optimus Prime” for the UK season 1 DVD set.
In 1998 Theo dressed up like the devil and proposed to Holly at a Halloween party. They were married in 1999 in a castle in Doylestown, PA. Around this time Theo adopted an unraced racing greyhound he named “Chamberlain.”
He also adopted a huge Persian cat he named “Fizgig.” Fizgig has appeared in more magazines than Theo but not as many as his wife.
In 2004 Theo and Holly moved to a Tudor house with a tower in Amherst, MA where they currently reside.
He also added an African Grey to his menagerie named “Eowyn” who he taught to say “hello” and “fuck you.”
He uses the computer a lot these days for his illustrations and web pages. Mush of his new work is more suggestive in nature and less literal, incorporating text and organic materials.
